I have a a question about old film projectors?

I picked up an 8mm projector and films at a garage sale but only some of the films play on it. It appears the hole spacing for the gears is different on some reels than others. I don't know really what I am asking I queasy I would like to know more about these old projectors and what sizes they came in for films I am sure there is someone who owned or still does own their old projector and could fill me in

I use to sell these machines in the 1960's. When home movies went to 8mm Kodak film, from 16mm size (or what ever film company made this decision) in their "great" wisdom made the film. It first came out in a metal magazine. But that wasn't very popular. So the film manufacturers came out with 8mm film in a 25 foot double spool. That is what your projector takes. The film was exposed in 8mm cameras, naturally enough. However, the 25 foot roll had to be turned over after the first 25 feet was exposed. The now full spool was switched with the now empty spool and threaded through the film gate. Then the other half was exposed. When the film was taken in for processing. The 25foot roll was developed. After developing the film was split in half with special machines. The end of the first 25 feet was spliced on the beginning of the second 25 feet. And this 50ft was returned on a plastic spool. Many people purchased an economical "splicer" and attached four 50 ft films together on a 200 ft metal reel and stored in a metal can. I am sorry but his 70 year old mind doesn't quite remember the sprocket spacing on regular 8mm film or Super 8 film. But when Super 8 replaced regular 8mm, 8mm projecotrs were replaced with Super 8 projectors. In time 8mm films were replaced by Super 8 film. This "new" format was housed in a plastic case like the original "magazine" film I spoke of. This new Super film was a full 50 feet in one continuous roll. And all one had to do was insert the super 8mm film cassette into the camera, expose a full 50 feet at once and remove and take in for processing. No turning the film over like with regular 8mm 25 foot loads.

there two versions of 8mm (1/4 inch wide) film. the older version was replaced with "super8" in the mid 1960's. some newer projectors can run both types, otherwise it will be one or the other.

Is standard 8 cine film the same as 8mm?

My dad wants me to buy him a film splicer and splicer tape for his standard 8 film. I can not find any on Ebay or the net. I do see lots of stuff for 8mm though. Is it the same thing? Many thanks.

There are two kinds of 8 mm flim, standard and super-8. Standard 8 or cine-8 has perforations on both sides of the film, while super-8 only has perforations on one side (allowing a larger image size on the film). You may be able to use a super-8 splicer with standard film, you just engage the sprocket to one set of perforations.

    Good product

0 5/5 Rusty (Stanley, NC USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: KODAK 8mm PRESSTAPE splice tape (formerly) I inherited a treasure trove of 8mm home movies from my late uncle and I've been converting them to digital. However, some of the film is brittle and broken and these help get the films through at least one showing so I can complete the conversion. I don't have any intent to splice shorter films together to make longer ones as this will be done digitally. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 23, 2013

    Work great!

0 5/5 Grant Barnhill - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: KODAK Super 8mm PRESSTAPE splice tape (formerly) They work well. Purists will tell you that you have to use cement splicing but using these presstapes worked fine for me. Be sure to get a good splicer, the one I used was tiny and a little difficult to work with. I would also recommend a viewer if you can afford it. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 26, 2013
